Africa On My Back was launched in 2016 by fierce founder Shannette Prince following her first visit to the continent. Along with her two sons, Isaiah and Cameron, Shannette built a social enterprise that brings authentic, durable and lightweight Kente-print backpacks and accessories to the rest of world. All items offered by Africa On My Back are handmade by artisans in Ghana, West Africa, and they’re sourced through artisanal markets, which are the second largest source of income in the developing world. That means Africa On My Back plays a part in giving small-scale African producers access to the $1 trillion African-American market. Plus, a percentage of all proceeds go to The King’s Compass, a community partner and mentoring organization that seeks to empower African-American boys in Houston, Texas.
