Five Online Business Ideas for Stay-at-Home Moms

By Raven Wright, CEO and Founder of Urbannature4kids

Home-based businesses have boomed since the COVID-19 pandemic. Many stay-at-home moms have discovered the benefits of working from home and earning money while still looking after their little ones. Some of the other benefits of starting an online business are:

  • You can set your own hours
  • Low cost to start
  • You can earn a decent income
  • You don’t need a certificate or college degree to get started in some industries

Here are five ideas for online businesses for stay-at-home moms:

1. Freelance Writer

As a freelance writer, you can share your expertise and let your ideas flow. To become a freelance writer, you’ll need an internet connection and a reliable desktop, laptop or tablet. A great starting point is making your own website. That way you’ll be able showcase a professional portfolio to potential clients. Alternately, sites like Freelancer.com and Upwork.com allow you to create a profile and search for opportunities.

2. Bookkeeper

If you’re good with numbers, consider online bookkeeping. A bookkeeper helps businesses and organizations keep their finances in order. The job consists of recording transactions and generating financial statements. To get started, search websites like Indeed.com for employers or clients looking to hire a bookkeeper as an independent contractor or freelancer. Some are willing to provide training. Others may require a certificate in bookkeeping or an associate degree in accounting.

3. Virtual Assistant

Virtual assistants are popular within many different industries. If you are a mom who is proficient at planning and completing tasks, you may want to consider virtual assisting. Businesses save money by outsourcing general and administrative assisting tasks. For example, virtual assistants are often responsible for taking calls and organizing bookings on Google or Apple iCloud calendar. Virtual assistant opportunities can be found on Upwork.com or Indeed.com.

4. eCommerce Business/Selling Online

Moms interested in selling retail products can sell and dropship items through eBay, Amazon and many others. To get started, research business ideas that appeal to you and source a reliable supplier or manufacturer. One key to making a profit for an ecommerce business is to purchase items in bulk for a low price, and to mark the item up for a higher price. Examples of items that can be purchased in bulk are cosmetics such as eyelashes.

5. Blogger

Becoming a blogger is great way to share your specific experience and expertise as a mom. There are many websites that are strictly for moms like NewParent.com and ScaryMommy.com. Or, you can make a website and grow your own following. Bloggers typically make a profit by placing ads or affiliate links, or selling ebooks to their subscribers. Bloggers may also receive gifts from various brands that want to reach a specific audience.
