Amy Spencer had been entertaining entrepreneurial thoughts for years. While working in corporate leadership roles, she’d been thinking about creating a business that would bring together more than two decades of experience as a communications generalist and her expertise helping companies radically evolve their communications approach. Only spontaneity wasn’t in Amy’s nature. A conversation with a colleague who suggested she “stay in her lane” as Amy shared ideas beyond her area of responsibility turned out to be just the nudge she needed. In that moment, Amy realized she was ready to make her entrepreneurial vision a reality.
More than a year later, Amy gets to do what she does best every day—bringing several disciplines of communications together to help small and midsize businesses, often creating new strategies and programs where none previously existed. Her company, Evo Communications, partners with organizations to identify the business problem they’re trying to solve and how communications can help. Then, she and her team bring those solutions to life. Amy’s ability to navigate multiple lanes is highly regarded by her clients.
Amy is also making another dream a reality, one she didn’t even realize she held. She is redefining what alignment between work and life can look like. Through Evo Communications, Amy is giving opportunities to talented people who want to work and have a lot to contribute, but who can’t commit to the time and physical presence often required by many organizations. That includes a talented and successful media relations practitioner who was ready to reenter the workforce after staying home with her kids, and a former communications executive nearing the end of her career who isn’t yet ready to retire but who no longer wants to work long hours in an office.
All Evo team members have unique situations and get to structure their work in the best way for them, while enjoying collaboration and creative connection often not available to solo freelancers. That includes Amy, who is still unwinding from the routine of corporate life and working to fully embrace a totally new model for how work gets done. She’s enjoying more control over her days, greeting her kids when they get home from school and even adopting a dog—something her family had always wanted to do but just couldn’t make work with long days away from home in the past.
As Evo Communications grows, Amy gets to do even more of the cross-functional communications work she thrives on, while extending her way of working to even more people who’ve been looking for the type of arrangement she offers. And Amy is finding more professional fulfillment than she ever thought possible by bringing both dreams—the one she held for a long time and the one she’s just realized—to life.
